The Dunes
©2011, 2015 Douglas S. Benson
Down the peaks of the western sky
On the trail from what to where
Thunderclouds preceded her and I
As we wandered wildly, here and there
We set camp for the night
By the side of the crumbling ruins
And in the silence before the squall
We heard the drumming of the dunes
And if I
Felt like, I
Could if I
Would if I
Beat the skin
Beat the drum
Just join in
When they come
The smell of wet dust all around
Thunderclap echoes drown the sound
Long enough for present tenses
And we grappled with our senses
Shook off oppressive moistened air
Quickly cleaned our dishes
Staked our rain fly tight to ground
And gave the greening sky our prayers and wishes
Dimly we
Knew that we
Would be fine
Just hold on
But too late
Down they come
From the clouds
Banging drums
<instrumental through next chorus>
Flashing light illuminated her to me
We held tight to one another
Like twisted earthworms in a mud sea
As the ground quaked, so did she
While I slept
She held on
Waiting for
Breaking dawn
When I woke
She was gone
Leaving just
Voiceless drums
Only echoes, fading from the dunes

The Way Out
by d.s. benson
10/1/2012
We shaped up
We shipped out
Worked hard and we
Didn't leave any doubt about it
We got up
But not until the bell ring
We walked proud
Did more than they were asking
chorus:
Thank you for your service to
The company. Whatever
Befalls you now good luck to you
In all your future endeavors
We counted
Our blessings
We didn't think
That we were so replaceable
Our neighbors
Had lower cost o' labor
We never once suspected
Our dog tags were erasable
<bridge>
Expected no guarantees
<Don't look for a handout>
We got none
But a boot print on our backsides
<Don't let the door Hit--you on the way out>
<instrumental>
Reassess! Move over!
Lay your body down
For we need something
To roll over
Progress! Erase me!
So proud I made it
Possible to seamlessly
Replace me.
chorus:
Thank you for your service to
The company. Whatever
Befalls you now good luck to you
In all your future endeavors
inst: <Expected no guarantees>
inst: <We got none>
inst: <But a boot print on our backsides>
Don't let the door Hit--you on the way out
On the way out
On the way out

JE NE SAIS PAS
1991 Doug Benson
French translation by Greg Benson
There’s a crowd of hungry people
Knocking on my door
Searching through my dreams
For something higher
With arrogance born of long contempt
I open up the blinds
And treat them to a vision of a liar
But their chanting keeps on getting louder
Demanding me to speak
To comfort, justify and praise
The worthless and the meek
Je ne sais pas
Je ne sais pas
Je ne sais pas
But they don’t understand
Je ne sais pas
Je ne sais pas
Je ne sais pas
This is all that I am
I don’t know what’s going on
I tell the teeming people on my lawn
There’s a crowd of many monkeys
Camped out on my lawn
Waiting for the miracle banana
A peanut vendors wanders
As the crowd parts before him
Hawking bread crumbs and sardines
As if its manna
And the chant finds new direction
As the vendor finds out soon
But he has no protection
And quickly is consumed
Je ne sais pas
Je ne sais pas
Je ne sais pas
Tell me what does it mean?
Je ne sais pas
Je ne sais pas
Je ne sais pas
Thank god its only a dream
I wake up as the crowd disperses
With shiny silver in their purses

That's When Shit Gets Real
July 2016, Douglas S. Benson
The waves when you won your love
The mountains when you feel
You found the one you waited for
That's when shit gets real
You faced the wind and got the job
You sailed the seas to earn enough
A pink slip in a quiet room
That's when shit gets rough
Heart, she stand
Life, she ponder
Love, she mend
But sorrow wend and wander
Heart, she stand
Life, she ponder
Love, she mend
<instr>
Flashing light in blue and white
A shaking hand that grips the wheel
A silhouette upon the street
That’s when shit gets real
That’s the moment when you drown
A crest that pulls you under
A mighty tower fallen down
A photograph torn a-sunder
<instrumental>
Ain't no mountain high enough
To see the wave that’s coming
Ain’t no valley low enough
To keep the wave from here
Heart, she stand
Life, she ponder
Love, she mend
But sorrow wend and wander
Heart, she stand
Life, she ponder
Love, she mend
But sorrow wend and wander
Heart, she stand
Life, she ponder
Love, she mend

Tumor
Douglas. S, Benson
They said I was an accident
They thought I was a tumor
Mom was not expecting much
But she had no sense of humor
When my older brother came
They thought that he would be the last
But just the same, the love bug came
And bit mama on the ass
<instrumental>
So I owe my fate to that single night
I guess desire is strange
Papa forgot the coin packet
But he had a pocket full of change
Now many people owe their lives
To such lusty folk as mine
And I am very proud to say
That the tumor was benign.

The Gods
Douglas. S. Benson
They make us cry
They make us cough
They fill our eyes with blinding mist
They watch us die
We hear them scoff
The gods do this to piss us off
We complain
About our fate
We curse our pain and the things we hate
We curse the gods
And wish they’d go
Or did they leave us years ago
